Traditional America Song: This Land is Your Land
This week, the focus will be traditional songs.
Mrs. Yollis’ class will kick off the week with a famous American folksong,
This Land is Your Land
by Woody Guthrie.
The words are below if you’d like to sing along!
Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
What do you think of when you listen or sing this song?
We sang the song a cappella (ah ku pel uh) which means it was sung without a musical accompaniment.
Do you play an instrument that could have accompanied our song?

Thanks for a lovely comment! You know, we are all sort of in the same class through our blogs! When I see a post here or on B4, I feel like I am a class member right there with you!
Did you have a chance to sing along with us? I hope so!
We live in a suburb, and there are not any farms around here. People live in neighborhoods and have pets like dogs and cats.
Do you live on a farm? Do you have horses or other animals?
Thanks for a terrific comment!

Thanks for a wonderful compliment! I’m glad you enjoyed our singing! I hope you get a chance to teach all of us a new song this week!
We practiced our song a lot, and then we recorded it. Sadly, we do not have a music teacher at the moment, so we had to sing a cappella. Do you remember what a cappella means?
Do you like to sing?

@ Flynn,
Thank you for a lovely comment! We worked with instruments for about ten minutes, and then the drums kept messing up, so everybody got frustrated and we had to shut the drum station down. It was a bummer, but we still had fun with our voices. I was very tight with a lot of people. I could barely move my arms!
I have never heard of the song G’day G’day. I am very excited to hear the song. I would like to copy the song in words and sing it myself. Then I can tell my brother I have learned an Australian song.
I love the feeling of sharing songs from our different countryies.
Sincerely,
Mia♥

Thank you for leaving a comment!
We tried to use instruments for the song, but it didn’t really work out the way we planned. So, we adapted and just sang with our voices. We still had a great time recording.
Our class would of loved to play the song on the recorder! I think it would of sounded much better. ( In my ears. ) For a matter of fact, my grandma still has a recorder, but she never takes it out of her cabinet. I really want to hear what it can do.
We are looking forward to hear all of the classes songs.

We did not make up the song, and it was written by Woody
Guthrie. You really don’t need music for that type of song, but it was still hard to sing!:)

In California, we don’t say g’day; we say hello or good day. We also do not say mate; we say nothing at all!
We noticed that you don’t put a period after Mrs. We say Mrs. and you say Mrs with no period.

Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
I always liked Woody Guthrie’s song. I wasn’t around when it was written in the 1940s but can remember it being played over the years. Woody Guthrie certainly had a talent for folk songs.
I was a bit of a fan of his son, Arlo Guthrie, and still have an LP record of his in my collection. Father and son seemed to know how to get down to the heart of life in America. Woody travelled with others displaced by hard times in America. His experiences flavoured his songs.
What a call for Americans, “This land was made for you and me.”
I enjoyed your a cappella version. I think it would have appealed to Woody Guthrie who mostly seemed to sing only with his guitar in hand.
Musical instruments? I dabble with piano, flute and recorder and could possibly keep up with the tune but my skills aren’t very high. I picked up playing an instrument only once I was a teacher as my family couldn’t afford instruments and lessons when I was young. I suppose that’s why, if I were rich, I would want to help children learn to sing, play instruments and dance at as high a level as they could.

Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
2KM and 2KJ loved watching you all sing this song! It is a great song and we like how California was in the lyrics. That makes it very special to you.
I don’t play any instruments myself but I think it would be a terrific skill to have.
We hope to post our Aussie song tomorrow,

Dear Mrs. Yollis’ Class,
We couldn’t help but sing along to your song! You are all wonderful singers. Did you know that there is version of that song for Canada?
Kennedy, Gwen, and LIly play piano, Brooklynn plays recorder, and Karin can play trombone a bit. We could have a whole ensemble accompany you. Mrs. Watson played the clarinet, alto saxophone, and trombone in school.
Do any of your students play instruments?

@ Mrs. Watson,
Thank you for saying we are wonderful singers. Although I wasn’t singing at that time, I was in the library taking a reading counts test. A reading counts test is a book report that you can do on the internet. How does your version of “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land” go?
Did you ever hear Kennedy, Gwen, or Lily play the piano? Did you ever hear Brooklyn play the recorder? Did you ever hear Karin play the trombone? How did you learn how to play the trombone, clarinet, and saxophone?
Yes, some people in our class play piano and guitar.
Sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Yollis,
I love the song, “This Land is Your Land.”
At first, when you mentioned that we were going to sing a special song that is called, “This Land is Your Land”, I knew that I had heard it before. At first I did not know the words, but when I got back home I started practicing over and over again. Once when I was practicing in my room I realized that I did the whole song correctly, and I had memorized it.
I think that it is a wonderful song and people can learn from it.
I play the piano, and I think that it would sound lovely with the piano too.
Do you like this American song?

Atrina

@ Mrs. Watson,
Thank you for the compliment. I had a great time singing “This Land is Your Land”. I did not know that Canada had its own version of the song. It would be fun to hear it.
I am learning how to play the keyboard. I am still practicing “Three Blind Mice”. I think I will have to practice a lot more before I can play “This Land is Your Land”.
Sincerely,
Maya
