It has been very interesting to see what students in other parts of the world do during their recess and lunch breaks. Here in Sointula we play outside during our breaks unless it is very rainy. It rains a lot here and so we only have an In Day if it is super miserable out. More >

We have really enjoyed learning about recess and lunch activities in Australia and New Zealand! We wanted to share some of the things we do during recess here in Connecticut, USA. Our lunch time is pretty short, only 30 minutes, so we will just focus on recess. Here is a video about some of the More >

Dear Mrs Yollis and students,
Wow, we loved watching your video of the game “Bamboo”. It looks like so much fun! We have never seen such a game before and we’d all really like to try it out.
We have similar bars in our Fitness Playground at school. That play area is just for Grade 3 and 4 students, so we will get to play there next year! We might try to play Bamboo too! I wonder if Leo would like to watch us?
Some games that we like to play are Shark Tiggy, Pole Tiggy and Hide and Seek. Do you play any of those games?

Dear Mrs Yollis,
What a great game! It’s very active and looks like a great game to watch, too.
I think we have some bars in one of our playgrounds that would be ideal.
We’ll give it a go and let you know if it’s a success.

Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,
We were very excited to see your post about Bamboo and even more excited to see that there was a video to go with it!
We heard about Bamboo when we quad blogged last year, but we couldn’t quite picture how it was played. Your video was great!
We have a similar set of bars on our playground, but we think they might be a little too tall. We are going to give it a try if it would just stop raining.
Thanks again for a great demo!

Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
Bamboo looks like a wonderful game. I can see it not only needs speed, it needs stamina.
I could see a number of times Mia almost tagged her opponent but in the end the slowed her and she was tagged. This is a wonderful way to exercise while having fun.
My local school (the last where I was a permanent teacher) has playground equipment but we don’t have bars like yours. When from my classes used the equipment, they would see who could complete a circuit in the fastest time. We also looked to see who had improved their personal best time.
Keep blogging everyone. I look forward to seeing the new posts.

Dear Mrs. Yollis,
I loved your video so much! I play next to the bamboo bars! Every day everybody cheers VERY loudly! I think that it distracts the people that are playing. Wouldn’t you? I like playing bamboo, because it gets your blood pumping, and it’s a lot of fun! A lot of people don’t know what bamboo is, but if they did I bet a lot of people would be playing it!

Dear Mrs Yollis and friends,
Your demonstration ofBamboo looks quite entertaining. Our grade went outside this morning and played our first game of Bamboo! We all had fun and even our teacher had a try!
Our arms were strong enough to help us cross over the bars. Some people had to say Bamboo but everyone tried and had fun!!
Check out our blog soon for videos of us playing Bamboo!

G’day evryone,
This is Ashleigh from 3DD. I just want to say that Bamboo looks like a great game, but guess what it was a lovely morning so Mrs de Vries said ”3DD why don’t we try and play Bamboo”
so we all said “YEAH” so we did. We have the same bars but green.
Our teacher Mrs de Vries tried it out and she did it.
What a great game it was.
Check out our blog because we have some videos of us playing Bamboo. We all said
” We want to play at snack time.”

Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
What a wonderful post!
We thought that it looked terrific, so we tried it. Everybody at the start were all like GO! GO! GO! and then we got to see everybody’s talent on the bars. There were plenty of people who were worried at first but when they had a try they thought it was fun and kept on wanting to play.
We learnt that you need very strong arms to lift your self up onto the bars and over!
It looked very cool, and everybody thinks they are going to play at Snack and Lunch.
Mrs de Vries (our teacher) looked like she wanted to have a turn so everybody said have a turn have a turn so she hsd a turn and she was very good at it.
Thank you for sharing your fantastic game with us!
To see 3DD (our grade) have a go at playing Bamboo!

Dear Mrs Yollis and friends,
Today first thing in the morning the whole class went to play Bamboo and it was boys VS girls and the girls won by a few points but Clancy from the boys team was heaps better than all of us. Mrs Devries is going to upload videos that Jackson took of when we were playing Bamboo, but of course Jackson got a go in the end.

Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
We loved your game of ‘Bamboo’!
As soon as the first bell went, 3DD (well our class) ran straight to the Fitness Playground to play Bamboo on our bars. We have the exact same parallel bars except our are green. What a great game it was!!!
When we did it, we had a girls’ team and a boys’ team. We all did a great job. This is what happened when we did it…
Skye: I played two boys in our class but I got too tired so I called out Bamboo and another girl replaced for me. I won the first one. What an amazing game!
Sophie: I had a lot of fun playing Bamboo! I think I will be playing it at snack and lunch time!! First I played Tyler and I won. Then I played Tom, but at the end when I was winning I tried to jump the bar I smashed my leg and got a purple bruise. It really hurt! But I had a one minute rest and then got in the line and had another game!
At the end we got a suprise – Mrs de Vries had a game of Bamboo (Mrs de Vries VS Riley) and won! GO MRS DE VRIES!
Keep up the great blogging!

Dear Mrs.Yollis,
When I started playing bamboo it was a little hard. But as I practice I get better each day.
I have a trick for bamboo. I wait for the opponent to try to tag me and then I jump over the bars. I keep on going until they mess up or get tired. Then I tag their hand.
Sincerely,
Trey

Dear Ella 2KM,
I also enjoy playing Bamboo, but my favorite game to play at recess and lunch is tetherball. Our tetherball court is a little different than yours because the court is painted on the blacktop and yours has stones surrounding the play area. I am pretty good at tetherball! I also practice on my court at home.
Do you enjoy playing tetherball?
