Recess in Connecticut
We have really enjoyed learning about recess and lunch activities in Australia and New Zealand!
We wanted to share some of the things we do during recess here in Connecticut, USA.
Our lunch time is pretty short, only 30 minutes, so we will just focus on recess. Here is a video about some of the things we enjoy during recess.
(If you have any trouble watching the video on the blog, here it is on SchoolTube.)

Thanks for watching!

Dear Mr Salsich and class,
Great post!
Your playground is AWESOME!
You have lots of great equipment and I also like
your game of kickball. We play a similar game called T-ball, but we don’t run to bases.
Best wishes,
Dana. ( class 2KM Australia)

Dear Mr Salsich and Grade 3
We wish that:
Dylan-we had a big playscape like yours
Ganda – we had a spider web
B4-we wish we had looked after our hoola-hoops better, because they seem to have got lost or broken!
B4- we wish we had tunnel slides
Similarities:
We play a lot of the same games – skipping, ball tag, four square, kickball,
Differences:
Samantha -we are not allowed to kick balls in the quad because of the windows, but we can kick on the field or in the cage
Holly – the teachers don’t usually play on our playground!
Questions:
Ganda – do you have a pool?
Elizabeth – do you have a cage? (a fenced court area)
Mrs McKenzie – why do your buildings have flat roofs even though you get a lot of snow? Our roofs are peaked, even though we don’t get a lot of snow but we do get a lot of rain.
warm wishes

Dear B4,
Thanks for your excellent comment! We do play a lot of the same games. We don’t play rugby though, just because nobody really knows the rules and we focus on American Football instead. But skipping, ball tag, soccer, four square, and kickball are all very popular.
To answer your questions;
~No, unfortunately we don’t have a pool but we sure wish we did!
~There isn’t a cage around our court area (we call it the blacktop), but the windows are very small and strong so we don’t have to worry about them breaking.
~Mrs. McKenzie, I don’t know why our roofs are flat… We do get snow and rain piled up on them sometimes. We have a few problems with leaking every now and then when we get lots of rain or snow.
Have fun at recess!

Dear Mr Salsich,
This is a great post.
I love your recess time it looks like fun, I like playscape and I also like the spider web. It looks like it is a windy day because the girl’s hair is going everywhere!

Dear Kayla,
Thank you for the wonderful comment. You are right, it was a very windy day when the girls were playing on the spider web. We get a lot of windy days in the autumn.
I checked out your blog and it is fabulous! I added it to the sidebar on our blog for the students to visit whenever they want.
Keep up the great blogging!

Dear Mr Salsich,
I like this post and I liked the video as well.
Your spider web is different to our one, because your spider web is made out of meddle and ours is rope. We also have different slides to you.
Can you guess how our slides are different to yours?

Haille.

Dear Haille,
Thanks for the compliment on our post and video. It was fun to make.
Hmm, I’m guessing that your slides are different because ours are tunnel slides that spiral, and yours aren’t tunnel slides. Am I right?

@ Mr Salsich,
Great post!
I wish we had a school like that.
It’s amazing that you can climb the pole of the slide.
We call a black top a basketball court.
Are you allowed to play on every playground?
Were not allowed to.
Do you have a teacher that goes and sort out problems?
We call them yard duty teachers.
Bye for now,

Dear Amelie,
We are allowed to use any playground, except we don’t want to use the pre-school play-area, and the pre-schoolers aren’t allowed to play on ours.

Sincerely,

Dear Amelie,
In second grade we had special research teachers. This year our class room teachers are our recess teachers.

Dear Mr Salsich and class,
Your playground is an amazing place. You have so much space for games and wonderful equipment to play on.
Kick ball is a game I have played with some of my classes over the years. We also, in my last school, had similar play areas were children could play soccer. It seems playgrounds around the world have many similar things.

Dear Ross Mannell,
You are right the play ground is an amazing place but you can get hurt on it too. So in some ways it’s fun but in some other ways it can be painful.

Dear Luke,
Thank you for replying to my comment. I know what you mean about a playground sometimes being a place where you can be hurt. For many years I was the first aid teacher for a school. We did have bumps and cuts at times.

Dear Mr. Salsich and class,
We really liked your video and the detail you added. We are working on adding details to our writing as well.
We wish that our school had a spiderweb, the big yellow slide, the double green slides, and that wonderful playscape. Years ago, they had a spiderweb dome at our school, but they removed it.
We have a playscape too. Ours is a bit smaller than yours. Ours have three leveled bars, a small rock wall, a connecting bridge, and these little “lily pad” type hopping areas. They are in the shape of octagon. We also have three spinning monkey bars.
Ellie just remembered that we have something similar to the spiderweb. However, it is vertical.
How often does Mr. Salsich climb the pole? Does he climb it easily?
Do any other teachers climb the pole? Does Mr. Salsich play any other games?
Is the green slide smooth or bumpy?

Dear Mrs. Yollis’ students,
I love your fantastic comment! Remember when we skyped together?
Thats sad that they had to take the spider web. What is there now? Is it more fun than the spider web?
I think that Mr. Salsich is very strong, so I think maybe yes he can climb the pole easily. I don’t really know if any other teacher climbs the pole, I think just Mr. Salsich does it. He plays a lots of fun games!
That’s very cool that it is vertical! We don’t have leveled bars. But I do want some in the bigger kid play ground!

Dear Mr. Salsich and class,
We loved watching your video. We love your slide. We have a blue slide here at our school, but it is not as fun as yours.
We noticed that you have a spider web to climb. We have one that is sort of like it. The girl who climbed the pole is very strong. Mr. Salsich must be strong too.
Do you have a lot rain on your campus?
Your new friends,
Madison and Maya [two students from Mrs.Yollis' class]
