Primary Students Connecting and Sharing
Recess and Lunch Activities in Leopold, Australia
It is Week Two of the “Our World, Our Stories” project!
The topic that we will be sharing this week is:
“Recess and Lunch Time Activities”
There are 45 students in 2KM and 2KJ and we are in Grade Two at Leopold Primary School. We live in Australia, in the state of Victoria.
Our teachers, Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan, team teach in a big open classroom and we complete all of our learning activities together. Leo is our special class mascot and he loves to blog as much as we do!
Our school year began in February and we only have eight weeks until the end of the year!
Check out our slideshow to find out what is in our school playground and what we enjoy doing at recess and lunch times.
Do you have any questions for us?
How is your recess or lunch time similar/different to ours?
What do you enjoy doing at recess and lunch times?

Dear 2KM and 2KJ,
We are in Mrs. Yollis class, and we enjoyed your slide show.
There are many similarities and a a couple of differences between our schools. First of all, we have a sandbox, but it is only for the kindergarten, first, and second graders. Both our lower yard (for first and second grade) and our upper yard (for third, fourth, and fifth) have climbing equipment. The upper play area has a rock wall. However, it is very small compared to yours!
We have some questions for you.
What are the rules for climbing the rock wall?
How many kids can be on it at one time?
What is down ball?
Your friends in Mrs. Yollis’ class,
Ellie and Logan
@ Logan and Ellie,
There are no rules for the climbing wall at our school.
Downball is a game and you have to hit the ball to the person that you’re versing, If your partner doesn’t hit the ball back to you, then you get a point, whoever gets three points first wins.
thankyou for your comment.
Bye for now,

Dear 2km and 2kj,
We really liked your slideshow!
Here are some differences, we don’t have chickens or a garden. We also don’t bring jump ropes to school, our p.e. teacher has them.
Here are some questions:
• Who tends the chickens?
• What are the chickens names?
• Do the chickens run out sometimes?
• Do many people go in the garden?
• How many people are allowed too pet the chickens at the same time?
We have some similarities, For example, we have a small rock wall and you have a big rock wall. We both have playgrounds. We both have a grassy area that we play games on.
Sincerely,
♥Sasha and Sarah♥

I Iove your comment!
Thank you for saying that you liked our slideshow.I like it too.
The kids in the older grades look after the chickens. I’m not sure what all their names are but I think some of them are called Poppy, Bob, Crunchie and Purchy.
They are suppose to stay in their cage but sometimes they run out when the gate is open while they are getting fed

Dear 2KM and 2Kj,
We both loved your slide show! What a beautiful school!
We noticed that both of our schools have play equipment. Also, both of our schools love to play soccer.
There are quite a few differences. First of all, we do not have chickens at our school. Also, we don’t have a courtyard. We don’t have a garden. Although it does look beautiful! We only have two playgrounds on the upper yard but we have four in the whole school.
Here are some questions we have for you:
•What are the chickens’ names?
•Who feeds the chickens?
• Are all of the playgrounds on the same yard?
•Are you allowed to play on different playground or only your own grades?
• What is the most popular things to do on your playground?

Dear 2KM and 2KJ,
We loved your video! Recess and lunch at your school look like a lot of fun. We can’t believe how many different areas you have to play in and enjoy.
Here are some things that are the similar:
Gwen-We both play ball games
Ana-We both have a playground
Mia-We both go outside at recess and lunch
Sophie-We both stay inside if it is raining too hard. We go outside it pretty rainy weather because we get so much of it.
Kennedy-We both have basketball courts
Karin-We both have a field
Here are some things that are different:
Brooklynn- We don’t have a garden. We have a bed in a community garden a few blocks from school
Ana-You have a chessboard and we don’t
Lily-You have a climbing wall and we don’t
Karin-We only have one playground
Quang-We have a forest to play in and a big stump to climb on
We have some questions for you:
Sharon-Do you play chess on the chessboard? I really like it!
Karin-Do the chickens ever try to bite you? Do they lay eggs for the school?
Mia-How long is your entire school day? You get a longer recess and longer lunch than we do (we have 15 minutes for recess and 45minutes for lunch).
Sophie- What kind of games do you play on the computers? Some of us like Mini Clip games.
Lily-What type of ball games do you play? We’ve never played Downball before and would like to learn about it.
Ana-What kind of food does the canteen sell? Do you eat outside?
Trista-Why do you have different playgrounds for different grades? Is it because your school is so big? We can’t pick a favourite, but we’d all love to try the climbing wall!
Kennedy-What do you do in the garden other than relaxing? Do you look after the plants?
Today is Halloween and we are all dressed up so we won’t make a video of our recess and lunchtime today or it would look pretty funny. We can’t wait to share some pictures with you soon though!

Dear 2Km and 2KJ
We think your school looks great. We noticed some similarities and differences.
Similarities:
Nathan – we can order our lunch at the office BUT it comes from a shop
Jack – we noticed that you have tennis courts too and we do skipping too, but we can use school ropes
Kaeleb- we like to go on the computers at lunchtime – in the classroom!
Tyla-we have ‘out of bounds’ places too, like in the little bush area
Differences:
Liam – we have only got two playgrounds
Samantha – we have only one sandpit
Paige – we don’t have any chickens but we sure want too!
Nikki – there is a cat that hangs around our school and the neighbour feeds it for us
Jack -we noticed that your area hasn’t got many hills. We have a flat school and town but there are hills all around Reefton.
Liam – you’ve got a giant chess board and we don’t
jack – we don’t learn Indonesian, we learn Maori.
Questions:
Elizabeth – we have some hopscotch and other games painted on the concrete. Do you?
Ganda – How do you play downball?
Nathan – How come you call your field an oval?
Teagan-Is it an oval shape?
warm wishes

@ Mrs McKenzie,
Thank you for the lovely comment that you left on the 2km and 2KJ blog!
No, we don`t have hopscotch or other games panited on the concrete. Well with downball one person has the ball and with their hand they tap the ball to the other person. We call the oval an oval because it`s shaped like an oval.Yes the oval is an oval shape.
Wow that is a lot of similarities and differences you have in your comment.

Dear Mrs McKenzie and B4,
To play downball you have to hit the ball to the other player and you keep on going until someone does not hit it.
It is very fun. You cannot grab the ball you have to hit it with your dan.
No we do not have anything painted on the concrete like hopscotch. But sometimes people draw on it if they have chalk.

Dear 2km and 2kj,
I l♥ed your slideshow! I have some questions for you.
• How old are the chickens?
• How long have you had the chickens?
• How many people are allowed on the rock wall at the same time?
• How many people go to the garden at lunch and recess?
• Why do you have the garden?
I wish that my school had a giant rock wall, but we do have a very small one.

Dear Sasha,

.We have had the chickens for about 2 years.
.About 5 people at a time are aloud to go on the
climbing wall at a time.
.Well, not many, but thats what I can say.
.Because it looks pretty.
Well at least you have a rock wall.
Sincerly,

Dear Sasha,
It was very nice to hear from you.
Well let’s start at the answers to your questions.
Our chickens are about 2/3 years old.
We have had them for about 2/3 years.
About 5/4 people on the rock climbing but no more people if there’s 5 on there.
Only a few usualy a few people if they want some piece and quiet.
We have the garden for people to rest, if they want some piece and quiet and if little girls want to play with Littles Pet Shops and Barbie Dolls.
Only grade 3, 4, 5 and 6s are allowed to play on the rock climbing wall.
I hope you liked my answers.
Best wishes,
Ava
Dear Sasha
Our chickens are 2 years old and we have had a chicken coup for about the same time (it was empty for a little while before the chickens moved in).
We are allowed 5 people on our rock wall at a time.
Lots and lots of people go to the garden. Some play hide and seek, others play chasey and others just walk around. It can be peaceful. We have the garden as we learn Indonesian and this was a project of the Indonesian teacher.

We have a few questions for you:
• Why do you call it prep equipment?
• Are the uniforms mandatory?
• What are the chickens’ names?
• Do you know how old the chickens are?
• Can you go to the upper grade playgrounds?
• How often do you feed the chickens?
• Can You play with the chickens during lunch?
• Are the chickens the school’s or 2KM and 2KJ’s pets?
• Can you blog in the computer lab during lunch?
• Do you have P.E. (physical education?

What an interesting post!
I would of never thought of the idea “Recess and Lunch” for Our World, Our Stories.
Our whole class is very jealous of your swimming pool!
Are you allowed to go in the pool when it is winter?
Is it ever to hot or too cold?
If our school ever had a swimming pool, I think our school should have it on the lower yard because it has more room.
I myself, is EXTREMELY jealous of your tennis court! ∆ For lunch and recess, are you allowed to play tennis? ∆ After school or before school, does anybody come and have tennis practice?

Hi Mia
I think you might have noticed the tennis courts on the B4 post.
In the winter the nets are taken down so the tennis courts get used for other games, as there are hoops on the courts as well.
In the summer the nets are up and students can play tennis at recess and lunch time. Sometimes students might play tennis in PE.
Anyone can use the courts after school or at weekends.

Dear Chloe,
Thank you for commenting back to me. My favorite game to play at school is tetherball. Tetherball is a game where a ball is attached by a long rope to a tall pole. The object of the game is to hit the ball hard in order to have the rope wrap all the way around the pole. It is usually played with two people.

Your gardens looked beautiful and peaceful. We wish that we had a friendship garden. We also think you are very lucky to have a climbing wall and separate playgrounds for different grades.
The cubby houses looked very nice. What are in them? Are they empty, or do they have wooden furniture? We only have one small cubby house, and it is for the pre-schoolers so we can’t fit! What kind of activities do you do in the cubby houses?

Dear 2KM and 2KJ,
You have a truly amazing playground. In my last school there was only one set of playground equipment. Children in different grades had their days to play so the bigger children wouldn’t be on the same day as Kindergarten (Prep) or Years 1 or 2.
What also impressed me is how new everything seemed to be. Has your school just had much new work done or is your school reasonably new?
The newest school I taught in was already 20 years old when I arrived and the oldest was over 80 years old.
