Primary Students Connecting and Sharing
A Typical School Day in Connecticut
Welcome to the first week of the “Our World, Our Stories” project!
The topic that we will be sharing this week is:
“A Typical School Day”
*
Mr. Salsich’s class from Connecticut, USA is very excited to get the sharing started.
*
We live in a small rural/suburban town on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. There are 21 students in our class.
Below is a slideshow of what a “typical” school day is like for us.
(You can click on the box in the bottom right corner to view it in full screen.)
*
How is your school day similar to ours?
How is your school day different from ours?
Do you have any questions about our school day?

Dear Mr. Salsich,
Great post!
We have to wear a uniform for school.
We do not get picked up by buses because nearly every single student lives in Leopold!
Some kids have to go to after school care because their mums or dads might be at work.
We go home at 3:30.

Dear Ella,
Well done on your comment.
Yes we do have to wear a uniform at school.
Have you ever been to After School Care?
I have been to After School Care.
Love from
Keira in your class.

Dear Mr. Salsich,
I really love your slide show.
Our school is different to ours because we do not go to school at 8:45 we start school at 9:00.
Our school is similar because we usually have our specialists after snack too (you call them specials).
We have a uniform to wear it is green and yellow and a bit of white.
What sort of clothes are you allowed to wear?
We do not have a cafeteria we have a canteen where you can order your lunch.
Do lots of people buy lunch at the cafeteria?
Best wishes love from
Keira in 2KJ and 2KM.

Dear Keira,
Thank you for your incredible comment and great questions!
At school we are allowed to wear any type of clothes, except hats, sunglasses, and shoes that don’t cover the toes. We aren’t sure if we can wear sleeve-less shirts. We will ask the principal.
Lots of us do buy lunch at the cafeteria. Today 11 students are buying lunch and 8 brought their lunch. Two students are absent.
We have to eat in the cafeteria. We are curious about what the canteen is like. Can you post a picture?
Yours truly,
Mr. Salsich’s class

Dear Mr Salsich,
Thank you for the compliment.
We have to wear hats in term 1 and term 4.
We can wear sunglasses sometimes. We call them sunnies.
We have to wear shoes that cover our toes like snikers, Volies and lots more.
What does absent mean?

Dear Keira,
Wonderful comment!
I am wondering, what is a canteen?
Is it a building or an outside tent?

Dear Mrs Yollis,
Thank you for your reply.
A canteen is like a cafeteria, but you go up to the window with money and you say what you want.
It is a small building and it is near the grade 4s, 5s and the grade 6s.
Love from
Keira your friend in Victoria Australia .
Dear Keira,
I just looked up the word canteen in my American dictionary. It says:
a small portable metal container for holding water or clear liquids.
I wonder if canteen is an Australian word? Do other countries use the word canteen to mean a cafeteria?
Your pal,
Matthew
(Yollis/California)
Dear Matthew,
Our canteen is where you go up to the window and you buy your food or you pick up your lunch order and take it away and eat in the yard somewhere.
I think some countries call it a canteens and some call it a cafeteria.
Other countries use the word canteen but some times they can mean tuck shop or cafeteria.
Best wishes love from
Keira in 2KJ and 2KM
Dear Keira,
Thank you for such a clear explanation of what a canteen is. We don’t think we have a canteen…ours is more of an outside cafeteria.
Our class is now confused about what a tuck shop is. Could you please explain. We think the tuck shop might be a place to buy t-shirts.
We buy our lunch from the lunch lady. Then we eat outdoors under a canopy or shade structure.
When we go out for lunch, the first 20 minutes are for play, and then we sit down and eat for the last 20 minutes.
What are some popular foods in Australia?
We know Vegemite is probably served at the canteen!
Sincerely,
Maya, Ellie, Acacia and Kelly
Mrs. Yollis’ students
Dear Maya, Ellie, Acacia and Kelly,
Thank you for replyling to me.
Thank you for your compliment.
If it is raining do you have to eat inside or outside?
A tuckshop is a canteen. In some states they call it a tuck shop like Queensland.
Vegemite is not served at the canteen because most people have Vegemite every day and the canteen is only a treat for kids that’s why they don’t have it at the canteen.
At the canteen you can get a sausage roll, hot dog, Dino snacks (chicken nuggets,) nachos and lots and lots more.
What can you get at the cafeteria?
Some foods in Australia are lamingtons (cakes), pavlova (meringue cake), caramaello koalas (chocolates), vegemite, fantales, (candies or lollies) and Anzac biscuits.
What are American foods?
Best wishes love from
Keira in Victoria (Australia) in 2KJ and 2KM.

Dear Mr.Salsich,
Great post!
By the way I’m in 2KM Australia.
Wow. You don’t have to wear school clothes.
What are blacktops and play-scapes?
At our school we don’t get picked up by buses but we do have after school care. (after school activities.) We go home at 3.30PM and you go home at 3.25PM. You go home 5 minutes before us.

Dear Jordi,
A blacktop is a flat area of asphalt where we can play ball or other recess games. A playscape is the equipment that has slides, ladders, and swinging bars for us to play on.
It’s cool that you don’t have buses. Do you walk there or do your moms (mums) or dads pick you up?

Dear Mr. Salsich,
I love the slide show.
How does your desk work? Our desks have a tub under them that slides out.
You also have neally the same playground and interative whiteboard (but you call it the Smartboard).
I love your classroom!

Dear Georgia,
Thank you for the compliment on our slideshow, it was fun to make.
Our desks are hollow so you can reach right into them to get the things you need. One of the students said they were “like little caves” for our supplies. We have a table in our room that has tubs under it that slide out like on your desks. Most of the students thought that would be pretty cool to have as a desk!
I love your classroom also. I think it would be neat to have a big room to share with another class. One thing I have noticed in some of the pictures from your class is that you sometimes have bright papers hanging from the ceiling. Is that artwork, or examples of student work?
Your friend,

Well that is cool how your desks go hollow inside.
Hahahaha like a little cave that is funny.
Well we all wish that we had your dek cause it would be pretty cool too but to have yours.
Yes it is clean to have two classrooms cause also pack up after we have played with something.
Well the work in the backround are student art work.
Do you have art work that your students do?
Would you like to have our classroom or not or is cause you to have it clean?

Dear Jarrod,
Thanks for the comment and the excellent question.
Our playground is one area, but it is divided up into three sections – a field for soccer and football, a “playscape” with slides and climbing bars, and a “blacktop” area that is asphalt for basketball and other activities.

@ Mr Salsich and class,
Great post I really like it!
The things that are the same are that we both have recess for 25mins; some of the specials are the same like art and P.E. and lots more.
Some of the things that are different are we say specialists and you say specials, you have a cafeteria and we have a canteen, you have to eat lunch in your cafeteria and we don’t have to eat our lunch at the canteen, that you wear casual clothes and we wear a uniform.
A canteen is a place where you can buy things that you can eat and there are hot things and cold things.
Why do you wear casual clothes and we wear a uniform?

Dear Alana,
What a great comment! I’m not surprised that you have your own blog, you are an excellent blogger.
I visited your blog and I really like the colors and the theme. Your purple panda named Lexi is very cute! I added your blog to our classroom blog’s sidebar.
That is a great question about the school clothes. I think we don’t wear a uniform just because most public schools in the USA don’t, I’m not really sure why though… I’ll ask the students why they think we don’t wear a uniform.
Do you like having a uniform? I bet it makes it easier to get ready for school because you don’t have to worry about what to wear. One of my students said she thought having a uniform would make everyone feel equal, so there wouldn’t be any teasing about clothes.
Your friend,

@ Mr Salsich,
Thank you for the great reply, I love it!
Did you leave a comment on my blog?
I think having a uniform is 50/50 because I think one of the 50s for having a uniform is because then you can get ready quick and you don’t have to pick and the other 50 is because you just get an odd clothes and you will look great.
What do you like the best about the our word our stories blog?
Thank you for saying I’m an excellent blogger.

I know something different about our day in the classroom. You wear casual clothes and we don’t. We wear a uniform.
We don’t eat at our canteen we sit on the floor of our classroom and eat our snack and lunch but not at the same time!
What is a morning assignment? When you have a break in the middle of maths do you call it brain food like us?
I have got one more question.
Does your principal come to visit sometimes? Ours does.

Dear Amelie,
Our morning assignment is a little worksheet we do every morning before the bell. For example, I could get a math sheet for a morning assignment.
In the middle of math we do have a break when we eat. It is not called brain food though. Instead, we call it snack.
For your last question, yes sometimes our principal comes in our class.

Dear grade three Class,
Hi my name is Millie and I am in 2KM.
Our school day is different to yours because we start at 9:00 and finish at 3:30 and we don’t do morning assignments
We only have one similar thing which is maths (math) because we work on our own, groups and on the interactive white board. (Smart board)
We have home work whitch is reading everyday but not on Fridays because we have free time and if we don’t read four times we don’t have free time just for that day.
How come you don’t have uniforms?
What are morning assignments ?
What do you do in assignments?

Dear Mr. Salsich and Grade 3s,
We liked the slideshow very much! You sure have a lot of fun at school.
We noticed that we have a lot of similar things in our school day. Here are a few we can think of:
Kennedy-We both do CAFE menu during reading and writing time
Sophie-We both have SmartBoards
Brooklynn-We both get called to have reading conferences with our teachers during Daily 5
Karin-We’re both reading the BFG!
Lily-We both have math. We do math by ourselves, with partners, and in groups too!
Trista-We both do Daily 5 (We saw the CAFE menu board)
Jacob-We both love our schools
Solomon-We both have the same book baskets
Sharon-We both start our day on the carpet
We also noticed some differences:
Sophie-Your day is longer than ours (by almost an hour)
Karin-You have a longer recess than we do, but a shorter lunch
Brooklynn-Your school day starts before ours does
Sharon-Your SmartBoard looks different than ours does
Kennedy-You have a lot more teachers than we do because we don’t go out for specials (except for PE)
Ana-You have a cafeteria and we don’t
We also have a few questions about your school day:
Karin-What animals have visited your classroom? We don’t have animal visitors very often.
Brooklynn-What kinds of after school activities do you have at school? We have sports and Tech Club.
Kennedy-What are you learning about in Health? We are learning about bullying right now.
Solomon-What kinds of food do you have in the cafeteria? We either bring our own lunch or go home.
We can’t wait to share our typical day with you.
Your friends,

Dear Mr. Salsich and class,
We really enjoyed your post about your school day.
We noticed some similarities. Your class has a SmartBoard and we have something similar called a MOBI. In a few of the pictures, we noticed you have cubbies. Ours is 8 rows of 3 or 8 x 3 = 24 cubbies. How many cubbies are in your container? We also deal with homework in the morning.
We noticed some differences. You start school at 8:45 and we start school at 8:15. However, we have announcements just like you in the morning.
We have some questions:
Do you celebrate Halloween? If so what kinds of costumes are popular?
What do you do on your SmartBoard?
Sincerely,
Leila, Sarah, Jake, and Royce

Dear Mrs.Yollis’ Students,
Thank you for that awesome comment!
Yes we do celebrate Halloween and there isn’t really any popular costumes but you do see a lot of cool ones.
Do you have a cafeteria? If you do how many kids are getting hot lunch today?
What are you working on in school? We are working on graphing in math. We are graphing what kids like to do the most at recess. The choices are black top, play scape, and field/grass. Do you have a field/grass area to play on?
I also think that it is cool that you are working on a slide show for the blog!
We do math on the smartboard and sometimes watch videos like non-fiction videos about animals.

Dear Kayla,
Thank you for commenting back. We do not eat in a cafeteria, we eat outside because it does not get very cold in Southern California. In our class, most students bring their own lunch from home, but some buy hot lunch. We are working on multiplication in class. We haven’t started graphing yet but I think we will start soon.
What are you going to dress up for Halloween this year?
from your new blogging pal,
Sarah
Dear Kayla,
You are a fabulous blogger too!
Yes, we have a cafeteria, but it is an outside area. Today about 7/25 of the students ordered lunch for the cafeteria. Every day the cafeteria offers ONE hot lunch, and a grilled cheese sandwich, and a garden burger. Every Tuesday, they offer a Caesar salad. How many students bought a hot lunch today?
We are working on many things in class. Right now, we are learning about multiplication. We just learned today about using graphic aids. One graphic aid is a number line. In reading, we just started a story called The Talking Cloth and it takes place in Ghana! Isn’t that funny! The story is about a cloth that talks using symbols and colors. The symbols and colors show feelings. What story are you reading this week?
Kayla, what are you going to be for Halloween? Trey will be a scorpion ninja, Acacia will be a white ninja, Maya will be a fiery phoenix, Aidan will be Bob Marley, Sammy will be a zombie monster, Brenden will be an army soldier, and Ellie is going to be Little Dead Riding Hood, and Kelly is going to be a bat.
Have a wonderful day and we are really enjoying this new blog!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Yollis’ students

Dear Mr. Salsich & class,
This is a wonderful opening to this blog. I have been following the blogs of Mrs Yollis and 2KM/2KJ (and commenting on their work). When I saw the beginnings of this blog, I knew I would have to follow it.
I have friends in Newtown, CT so have some connection with your state despite being in Australia. I found your slideshow very interesting and can see similarities and differences to classes I’ve taught in NSW, Australia.
If this first post is a sign of things to come, your sharing will become famous in the global classroom of blogging.

Dear Mr. Salsich and Grade 3,
Today we started to make a movie about our typical day and then things went anything but typical!
First the photographer was supposed to arrive at 9:00 am to take school photos, but called and wouldn’t be coming until the second ferry arrived at 11:00.
Then, just after recess before he was due to arrive the power went out and was supposed to be out until about 3:00. We listened to the BFG and did some math in the semi-dark before lunch.
Parents started to arrive to take their kids home because of the power outage and then once more than half the students had left the lights came on early just before lunch.
So our afternoon was all mixed up too with pictures after lunch.
We’ll try finish our video tomorrow. Crossing our fingers and toes that the power stays on

Wow! That doesn’t sound like a typical day at all! But it does sound like you made the most of it and still got a lot done.
I’m curious to know what part you are at in The BFG, but I think you are ahead of us and I don’t want you to give too much away. We are near the beginning where Sophie almost gets eaten by the Bloodbottler when she was hiding in the disgusting snozzcumber. We are almost at my favorite part about Frobscottle and whizzpopping!

One of our differences is where we eat. In sunny California we get to eat outside at picnic tables in our lunch area. On rainy days we have lunch in the classroom.

Here are some similarities we noticed:
Paige – we do daily5 and CAFE for reading too
Jonathon – we do writing and last term we were working on making deliberate word choices
Matthew – we do PE and art and Library, but we don’t have different teachers for it
Liam – we have a big field and two playgrounds
jack – in the morning we sit on the mat. We do roll, calendar, blog, poem and then it’s maths
and some differences:
Nikki – our blacktop area is called the quad
Lukah – we can’t sit on our bench, there are laptops there
Dylan – we start at 8.50am and we finish at 3pm
Samantha – we don’t have snack time, we have fruit after writing, before recess (which we call playtime)
Ganda – we eat our lunch outside (or on wet or cold days we eat in the classroom)
Yaksh – we have two teachers every day. Mrs Webb takes us when Mrs McKenzie is taking Reading Recovery
Nathan – we have a uniform. The colours are burgundy and grey or white, with black pants or shorts. Girls can wear a pinafore if they want to.
Dyaln – we have shorter playtime, but a longer lunchtime
We also do handwriting. Do you?
We have pets day. Do you?
We have assembly in the hall on Friday afternoons. Do you?

What a great way to share your information about your school day. In your slideshow you talked about the books you have shared. I have read The BFG and enjoyed it but have not heard of the other book – Roxie and The Hooligans. Is it a good story?
Our school has a canteen where children can buy their lunch but it only opens for three days of the week.

Dear Mr. Salsich and class,
We really enjoyed learning about your day. We have quite a few things in common with your day. First off, we also have snack at exactly ten o’clock everyday. Instead of doing comments during snack time though, we do comments first thing in the morning. It also seems like both the teachers like The BFG. That’s one of Mr. Avery’s favorite books. We also have math in the morning and ELA in the afternoon. And, we’ll also soon be learning about adaptations of animals.
We noticed that you don’t have recess and lunch back to back. We saw that you have specials in between. We have recess and then lunch right after. You also get out of school much later than us. We get out at 2:30. You also have health class. We don’t. We have chorus instead. Your morning announcements are at 9:00 a.m. We have ours at 8:30. We also love how you get to bring in live animals.
One thing that we were wondering, do you have P.E. everyday? We only have it once a week.
Thanks!

Hello Mr .Salsich’s Class,
We really liked your pictures, it was fun to see what you do during the day.
Some things that are the same for us are:
Shanoy: We also have break.
Marbella: We have art too – and we really like that class.
Runda: We have library too – one time a week.
Khya: We have PE,
Melissa: (but we don’t have PE on a basketball court, we have it outside in the grass)
William: We have the same subjects.
Things that are different:
Leah: You have different things to do at recess (like your play-scape. What is that?)
N’Gaii: We go home at 3:30, and you go home at 3:25.
Ivan: You have a longer break than us.
Christian: It doesn’t snow here (we read your class description)
Here are some questions we have for your class:
How long do you stay in the computer lab?
We call our classes Standards, not grades. Do you know what standard you would be? We are 8, 9, and 10, and we are in Standard Three.
We just learned about national symbols in social studies. Our national animal is the Tapir and the Toucan. What is your national animal?
How big is your school? Ours has 900 students including the PreSchool. There are 3 Standard III classes.
What is your school’s name? Our name is St. Peter Claver RC School.
We will post pictures soon!
Thank you!

Dear Miss Usher and Standard 3
It’s nice to meet you!
When I first started teaching we used to call our classes Standards in New Zealand too.
Some years later it changed to ‘Year’.
In my class I have Year 1 and Year 2 and Year 3 students. They are aged 6 and 7.
Our oldest Year 3 will turn eight in December.
I think Year 3 would be the same as Standard 1.
What do you call your junior classes?
warm wishes

Dear Miss Usher and Standard III,
We were very excited to see a comment from you! We can’t wait to learn more about Belize. There was a student in our class last year who went to Belize for a month for a vacation. She loved it there.
We have a lot of things in common with you too. Art is one of our favourite activities. We have art every Friday. We also go to library once a week and have the same subjects as Mr. Salich’s students do.
We thought it was a cool fact that you never have snow. We may live in Canada, but we hardly get any snow either. We might get a few centimeters once or twice a winter, but it never stays more than a day or two. We really like the snow.
Like Mr. Salsich’s class we also call our classes grades. In our grade 2/3 class we have students who are 6,7,and 8.
We love your national animals! Some students had never heard of the tapir, but we had all heard of the toucan. Our national animal in Canada is the beaver.
Your school sure is big! You have more people in your school than we have on our whole island. Our population is about 800 and we have 50 students in our school. Our school is called A.J. Elliott Elementary.
We can’t wait to see your pictures!

Dear Mr Salsich
I am Jack from B4.
In our school the similarities are we both work in groups and the differences are that we don’t have different teachers for different things and we don’t have a cafeteria.
Do you have assembly on Friday?

Dear Mr Salsich
I am in B4. My name is Liam. I am in NZ.
These are some of the things that are different to you. We have two playgrounds and we have two teachers.
Your morning tea is longer than ours, but our lunch is longer than yours. Ours is an hour and your’s is half an hour.
We have 22 people in our class including the teacher.

Dear Mrs. Watson and class
I had fun watching your class video.Your classroom looks very comfy with a couch and coffee table.Very cool to have a I-Pad in your classroom.I would like to go home for lunch as we eat at our school. At recess it must be cool to see animals walking on the playground. We sometimes see coyotes in the hills.
